Vulnerable women are being hurt by Quebec’s housing crisis, coalition warns

And if the shortage of housing were not enough, many women must combat discrimination in their quest for suitable apartments. Throughout Quebec, women are discriminated against because they receive social assistance, because they are Indigenous or immigrants, or because they have children.

Sometimes, shelter workers must take the reins and call landlords to oblige them to respect women’s rights, said Manon Monastesse, director of the FMHF.

“It’s the case in Chibougamau for indigenous women and in Montreal for immigrant women who have several children,” she said to illustrate.
